How to Be a Social Media Rockstar: Is Your Band Doing This?

fusion5Bands, listen up.  If you’re the least bit interested in using social media to promote yourself (and you should be), here’s something you don’t want to miss.  This week Music Think Tank published a concise, powerful article called How to Be a Rockstar at Social Media: What Every Band Should Be Doing.  Written by Simon Tam, it gives specific advice to musicians on using social media as a listening and learning tool – something too many social media self-promoters overlook.  “I’ve mentioned it a few times before: treat social media more like a telephone and less like a megaphone,” says Tam.  Well said indeed.

Tam recommends using tools like Google Alerts, Hootsuite, TweetDeck, Social Mention and Topsy to tune into what’s being said about you, your band members, your songs and albums.

And what if you find something?  Use it as an opportunity to interact.  Whether they’re singing your praises or talking trash, here’s your chance to be part of the conversation.  Be civil (not reactionary), and be sure to say thanks for any kind words.  They took the time to listen to you – now return the favor.  People love knowing you’re paying attention.
